Happy B-day, Michael

My day started out today kind of rocky, but quickly turned around. I stayed up way too late last night, followed by being woken up by the kids way too early, cutting my total sleep down to less than 6 hours. I decided to head out for the day anyway to shop for groceries and hit the gym.

Today, I skipped the temptation to hit a drive through for a brkfst sandwich and coffee, opting instead to pick something up at my local grocery. I'm glad that I made that choice after finding a triple berry and oat bagel, a banana and a Yoplait triple berry torte yogurt. Cost $1.64. Less expensive than a brkfst sandwich and I certainly felt a lot better after eating this instead of a fast food sandwich.

I have been trying to stretch our grocery budget and money in other ways. I have found that using cash at the grocery store is easier for me to keep track of my spending than swiping my debit card at all my stops. It makes me more conscientious about what I'm spending. I stopped by my local ALDI store for their 35 cents fruit sale and stocked our fridge with $23 spent on peaches, nectarines, plums, bananas, peppers, skim milk, eggs, pretzels, salad stuff, bread, ground turkey and sweet Italian turkey sausage, etc. Then CVS for 79 cent Diet Coke & Coke Zero 2-liters.

Tonight, I am making a Chinese salad which is basically shredded cabbage, carrots combined with a tossed salad, plus Light Asian Sesame salad dressing and grilled pork chops. Because of the deal I got on the turkey sausage and peppers, I'm going to make baked stuffed peppers for Saturday night. My kids may not like it, but I am determined to introduce them to as many healthy foods as I can while they are young.

Today is Michael's birthday. Unfortunately, he has to work today. We celebrated his birthday earlier in the month because we had tickets to Universal and the kids could not wait to give him his gifts: a Green Lantern T-shirt and a video game followed by the older boys taking him to see Green Lantern on Father's Day.

My weekend is going to be busy. I'm waiting for Brad to catch the bus into town. I have to pick him up soon and get him to work later tonight. Kaitlyn has a Girl Scout trip this weekend. Somewhere in between, I have 3 projects to complete. One of my project includes creating a flow chart in excel, which I am not sure how to do.

Despite all of this, I am looking forward to the weekend.

Impatience

I cannot believe that I have finished a full semester of teaching 4th grade.  In many ways, I have loved my job and the challenges that it brings.  However, my teaching position is just a starter position and not one I necessarily want to stay in long term.  The salary at the small school where I teach is honestly too low for me to balance the needs of my family and repayment on my student loans. I've been looking forward to the changes that I hope the next 6 months will bring.  I still have 1 remaining teaching exam (Elementary Education) to take in February.  I am still working as a sub around my full time teaching schedule to keep my fingerprints/background check active with the district.  I am working on my autism endorsement, with only 2 classes remaining and should finish over the summer as one of the classes is not offered until then.  I am also working on my remaining requirements for my permanent certificate, which also will be completed ove...

Anniversary Week

This past week was such a lighter week workwise, but I was very busy at home.  I usually spend my weekends playing catch up, running errands, working out, taking teens to jobs and running out for coffee and groceries.  This weekend was no exception. Added to all the normal stuff, I found an error in my pay slip, received a cell phone bill over double what we expected when we upgraded 4 phones this month and one of my teens may have lost his local job.  Things happen.  I am not stressing over it. In the past, this would have been a freak out.  Now, I am learning to deal. I corrected my pay, and I will see it next payday.  I reviewed my phone bill and discovered 4 errors and the phone company corrected it today. As for my teen, he is going to either hope he still can get back on the schedule or he is going to have to find another job.  That falls on his shoulders to work out. My youngest daughter and I have posted all of her clothes online fina...

When your pause for breath.....

This has been a very busy few months for me.  Since taking over my autism classroom, I have attended countless meetings and trainings, worked hours on lesson plans and have been working on taking specialized graduate classes for the autism student.  With my semester winding down and the school year, I was hoping for a quiet, relaxing summer in which I could shop, go to the beach and check out some fun activities with the kids.  Just a chance to pause for breath, sleep in and luxuriate in the moment of having summers off.  Alas, that is not to be the case. I started getting an inkling about my summer when I was asked to teach summer school for 4 weeks.  Then came the official word from the state:  I have to take an assistive technology course and complete my ESOL endorsement.  This week, I met with my administration about plans for next school year (yay! I'm getting renewed)  and somehow found myself agreeing to take on doing a reading endorsemen...
